Mustafizur and Taskin Lead Bangladesh’s Bowling Attack for T20 World Cup
Fast bowlers Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed will spearhead Bangladesh’s bowling attack at the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to commence on February 7, 2024. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the 15-man squad on January 4, revealing that batter Jaker Ali has been dropped from the team following a disappointing performance last year.
Taskin returns to the squad after competing in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, where he missed Bangladesh’s successful 2-1 series win over Ireland in December. He has a record of 106 wickets in 86 T20 internationals, making him a vital asset to the team. Alongside Mustafizur, the pace attack will also feature Tanzim Hasan, Shoriful Islam, and Mohammad Saifuddin. The spin department will comprise Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, and Mahedi Hasan.
The captaincy will be led by Litton Das, who will be responsible for scoring runs alongside teammates Tanzid Hasan and Saif Hassan. Jaker Ali’s exclusion is notable, as he only managed to score 378 runs in 26 T20Is during 2025, prompting the selectors to seek stronger options for the World Cup.
Bangladesh’s World Cup Campaign and Team Dynamics
The T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh finds themselves in Group C alongside the West Indies, England, and Italy. Their group stage matches will take place primarily in Kolkata, culminating with a final game against Nepal in Mumbai. The tournament’s opening match for Bangladesh will be against the West Indies, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting campaign.
Recent reports indicate that the BCB is exploring options to relocate their World Cup matches out of India. This decision arises after Mustafizur Rahman was released by his Indian Premier League team, amidst rising tensions between the two nations. This situation adds a layer of complexity to the team’s preparations as they aim for a successful tournament.
The selected squad reflects a blend of experience and youthful talent, showcasing the depth of Bangladesh’s cricketing potential. The upcoming T20 World Cup presents a significant opportunity for the team to make its mark on the global stage, as they compete against some of the strongest cricketing nations.
