Fast bowlers Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed will spearhead Bangladesh’s bowling attack at the upcoming T20 World Cup, set to begin on February 7, 2024, in India and Sri Lanka. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced their 15-man squad on January 4, confirming the absence of batter Jaker Ali, who struggled in the previous year.

Taskin returns to the national team after missing the successful 2-1 series victory over Ireland in December due to his participation in the Abu Dhabi T10 league. With 106 wickets in 86 T20 International matches, he brings significant experience to the pace attack, which also includes Tanzim Hasan, Shoriful Islam, and Mohammad Saifuddin. The spin department will feature Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, and Mahedi Hasan.

Captain Litton Das will be responsible for leading the team, alongside key players such as Tanzid Hasan and Saif Hassan, as they aim to score runs and secure victories. Jaker’s omission follows a challenging year in which he accumulated just 378 runs in 26 T20Is, indicating a need for stronger performance in the squad.

Group Stage Matches and Controversy

Bangladesh finds itself in Group C, where it will face formidable opponents including the West Indies, England, and Italy in Kolkata. The group stage will conclude with a match against Nepal in Mumbai. The opening match against the West Indies is anticipated to set the tone for their campaign.

The team announcement coincides with reports that the BCB is exploring the possibility of relocating their World Cup matches out of India. This decision arises after Mustafizur was released by his Indian Premier League team, amidst rising tensions between the two nations. The board’s considerations reflect the complexities surrounding international relations, particularly as they impact sporting events.

The squad for the T20 World Cup is as follows: Litton Das (captain), Tanzid Hasan, Parvez Hossain Emon, Saif Hassan, Tawhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Quazi Nurul Hasan Sohan, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Shaif Uddin, and Shoriful Islam.

As the T20 World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on Bangladesh’s performance, particularly on how Mustafizur and Taskin lead the bowling lineup in pursuit of success on the international stage.
