Morocco showcased a dominant performance in the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Zambia 3-0 on December 29, 2023, in Rabat. With this victory, Morocco secured the top position in Group A, finishing with seven points. Forward Ayoub El Kaabi scored twice, while midfielder Brahim Diaz added another goal, leading their team to a convincing win.

The match began with Morocco attacking aggressively, putting pressure on the Zambian defense from the outset. Just 12 seconds in, Zambian goalkeeper Willard Mwanza was forced to make an early save. In the sixth minute, he again denied a close-range effort from Abdessamad Ezzalzouli. However, El Kaabi broke the deadlock in the ninth minute, heading in a corner kick despite the presence of three defenders.

Diaz, who has been a key player for Morocco throughout the tournament, scored the second goal in the 27th minute. Timing his entry into the box perfectly, he fired a left-footed shot into the net, showcasing his attacking prowess. El Kaabi’s second goal came from a spectacular bicycle kick in the 54th minute. Initially flagged offside, a VAR review confirmed he was onside when the ball was played, allowing the goal to stand.

Hakimi’s Return Boosts Moroccan Squad

Morocco’s captain, Achraf Hakimi, made a notable return as a substitute in the 64th minute. Recently crowned African Footballer of the Year, Hakimi had been sidelined for nearly eight weeks due to an ankle injury sustained during a Champions League match. His recovery has been praised by the coaching staff, and he received a warm welcome from fans upon his entry onto the pitch.

In the 81st minute, Hakimi nearly added to the scoreline with a well-placed attempt, but Mwanza made a remarkable save to deny him. The match concluded with Morocco firmly in control, leaving Zambia at the bottom of the group with two points, eliminating them from the tournament.

Morocco’s performance marks a significant turnaround after a shaky start to their campaign. Following a narrow victory over Comoros and a disappointing draw with Mali, the team has now reaffirmed their status as tournament favorites. They await their opponents for the knockout stage, which will be one of the four best third-placed teams.

As the tournament progresses, Morocco’s blend of youthful talent and experienced players like Hakimi and Diaz positions them as a formidable contender for the Africa Cup of Nations title.
