Mbappé Critiques Real Madrid’s Effort After Benfica Defeat
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé expressed disappointment following the team’s 4-2 defeat to Benfica in the UEFA Champions League on January 29, 2024. He noted that the team lacked the intensity and desire demonstrated by their opponents, which ultimately led to their failure to secure an automatic spot in the last 16 of the tournament. In a dramatic turn, a last-minute header from Anatoliy Trubin, Benfica’s goalkeeper, helped the Portuguese side advance on goal difference.
Mbappé, who scored twice during the match, addressed the media after the game, stating, “It isn’t about quality, and it isn’t about tactics. It’s about having more desire than your opponent.” He emphasized that Benfica’s motivation was evident, contrasting it with the lack of urgency displayed by his team. “You could see that everything was on the line for Benfica, and you couldn’t see that for us, and that’s a problem,” he added.
The season has been tumultuous for Real Madrid, marked by the departure of former manager Xabi Alonso and a surprising exit from the Spanish Cup at the hands of second-tier Albacete just two weeks prior. Although the team had shown signs of recovery with three consecutive victories under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa, the loss to Benfica represented a significant setback.
Concerns Over Consistency
The inconsistency in Real Madrid’s performance has raised concerns among players and fans alike. Mbappé pointed out, “We aren’t being consistent in our play. We have to solve that. We can’t do it one day, and then not another. A team of champions doesn’t do that.” His remarks reflect a broader issue within the squad, as they struggle to maintain a high level of play throughout the season.
Currently, Real Madrid sits in second place in La Liga and is preparing to face Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. The upcoming match presents an opportunity for the team to regain momentum and address the issues highlighted by Mbappé.
As the club aims to return to form, the focus will undoubtedly be on fostering a more competitive spirit and ensuring that players exhibit the necessary drive to succeed at the highest levels. The coming days will be crucial for Real Madrid as they seek to reaffirm their status as one of Europe’s elite football clubs.
