Manchester United Manager Confirms No Transfer Activity Planned
Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, announced that the club does not anticipate making any transfers during the January window, despite the team’s pursuit of a spot in the Champions League next season. Speaking at a press conference on January 2, 2024, Amorim emphasized the need for focus on upcoming matches rather than potential squad changes.
United, currently in sixth place in the Premier League, will face Leeds United on January 7. A victory at Elland Road could elevate them to fourth position, depending on other match outcomes. Amorim stated, “We have no conversation to have any change in the squad. There is a process, there is an idea that is going to continue.” With three points separating his side from Liverpool in fourth, and a tight race with Chelsea in fifth, the manager stressed the importance of concentrating on their next game.
Despite rumors linking Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee with a move to Serie A club Roma, Amorim confirmed that no players have approached him about leaving. “None have asked (to leave). I don’t expect them to come to me and ask anything,” he remarked, reinforcing the club’s commitment to current squad members.
In terms of player availability, Amorim anticipated an unchanged lineup from the squad that drew 1-1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last fixture. He mentioned that injuries and international call-ups could lead to opportunities for academy players, particularly given Leeds’ fast-paced style of play. “They have a lot of pace and sometimes we struggle with pace. They are confident, but we proved we can win any game in any situation… so we will try to do that again,” he noted.
The manager confirmed that key players, including Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt, will be unavailable due to injuries. Additionally, Kobbie Mainoo is sidelined with a calf injury, while captain Bruno Fernandes is out with a hamstring problem. Amorim expressed uncertainty regarding player recovery, stating, “We shall see tomorrow, we have more training. I don’t think anyone is going to recover but we will see.”
The upcoming match against Leeds is expected to be intense, with fans anticipating a fierce derby atmosphere. As the team prepares for this critical encounter, Amorim’s focus remains on maximizing their current squad’s potential while navigating through injuries and absences.
