Man Sentenced to 12 Weeks in Jail for Misappropriating NTU Funds
A 27-year-old man, Mohamed Basheer Hanif Mohamed, has been sentenced to 12 weeks in jail for refusing to return over S$9,000 (approximately US$7,010) that was mistakenly transferred to him by Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The sentencing occurred on December 26, 2023, following Basheer’s guilty plea to one charge of dishonest misappropriation.
On November 10, 2023, NTU’s finance officer reported that the university had inadvertently transferred S$9,087.04 to Basheer’s POSB bank account. This account previously had no funds. Upon noticing the deposit, Basheer withdrew the money for personal use, including spending on a hotel staycation and daily expenses.
Despite efforts from both the finance officer and POSB to contact him, Basheer remained unresponsive. The finance officer sent an email on November 21, 2023, notifying Basheer of the erroneous transfer. In his reply, Basheer claimed he was unaware of the funds as he had ceased using the account. He also refused to provide updated contact information and instructed the finance officer to refrain from further communication.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Basheer was a first-time offender. The prosecution left the sentencing decision to the court. Appearing via video link without legal representation, Basheer indicated that he had been in remand since October due to an inability to post bail. He described his challenging financial situation, stating that he lived in a rented flat with his wife.
As the court inquired whether a representative from NTU was present, a woman stepped forward. It later became clear that she was Basheer’s wife, not a university representative. The judge noted that Basheer could have faced a maximum sentence of up to two years in prison, fines, or both for his actions.
Basheer expressed remorse during the hearing, assuring the judge that he would not reoffend upon his release. The case highlights the legal repercussions of mishandling funds, emphasizing the importance of accountability in financial transactions.
