Knifeman Injures Nine in Taipei Subway Attack, Jumps to Death
At least nine individuals sustained injuries in a violent attack in Taipei on December 19, 2025. A man armed with a knife initiated the assault after deploying smoke grenades near a subway station, leading to chaos among pedestrians. Following the rampage, the assailant jumped from a nearby building and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Video footage captured the suspect throwing smoke grenades at the Taipei Main subway station, causing panic as bystanders rushed to escape the cloud. Reports indicate that after throwing the grenades, the assailant boarded a subway train, exited at the next stop, and continued his attack on the street, brandishing a knife and threatening pedestrians. Witnesses described the scene as horrifying, with many people screaming as they sought refuge in nearby shops.
Taiwan’s Mayor Chiang Wan-an confirmed that four of the injured were in serious condition. Among the victims was a pedestrian who suffered a heart attack during the incident and was in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital. Additionally, another person experienced respiratory injuries due to the smoke.
The Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai emphasized that authorities are investigating the suspect’s background and have ordered increased security measures at train and subway stations across the island. This incident has raised concerns about public safety in transportation hubs.
The attack in Taipei follows a similar disturbing event in the UK, where ten people were hospitalized after a mass stabbing on a train traveling from Doncaster to London. Emergency services in both incidents responded promptly, with armed police and medical teams deployed to manage the situations.
Mayor Chiang expressed condolences to the victims and their families, stressing the need for vigilance in public areas. The local community is grappling with the shock of the attack, highlighting ongoing discussions about safety and security measures within urban environments.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain alert while using public transportation and report any suspicious activity.
