Ireland and New Zealand Advance to Women’s Rugby World Cup Quarter-Finals

Ireland secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Rugby World Cup after defeating Spain 43-27 in a thrilling Pool C match. The victory was achieved on Sunday in Exeter, where Ireland showcased their strength with seven tries. Meanwhile, New Zealand also advanced, comfortably overcoming Japan with a score of 62-19.
Ireland’s performance marked a significant achievement, with their 43 points setting a new World Cup record for the team. Key contributions came from wing Anna McGann and number eight Grace Moore, who each scored two tries. Additional tries were added by flyhalf Dannah O’Brien, wing Amee Leigh Costigan, and centre Eve Higgins. Ireland led 24-12 at halftime, but Spain put up a strong fight, managing to score five tries of their own.
Following the match, Ireland prop Ellena Perry acknowledged the challenge posed by Spain. “We knew Spain would come out firing and they pushed us right to the end,” Perry told the BBC. She emphasized the need for front foot ball, which proved difficult at times, but expressed delight at securing the win.
In the other match, New Zealand demonstrated their prowess against Japan, leading 38-5 at halftime. The team scored a total of 10 tries, with Braxton Sorensen-McGee notably achieving a hat-trick. Despite the impressive scoreline, the match was not without its challenges, including a red card for Laura Bayfield for collapsing a maul, which resulted in a penalty try for Japan.
Captain Ruahei Demant reflected on the game, stating that the team has not yet delivered a complete performance. “We are still a way off, we have not yet put in an 80-minute performance yet,” she said. Demant praised Sorensen-McGee, who is making her World Cup debut this season. “She is a wise and mature player. She is one of the smallest players this season but she has the biggest heart, bravest heart and biggest shoulders. I am so proud the world can see her talent.”
Both teams will be looking to build on these performances as they prepare for the upcoming quarter-finals, with Ireland and New Zealand showcasing their determination and skill in this prestigious tournament.
