Indonesia Dismisses Police Officer After Death of Delivery Driver
A police officer in Indonesia was dismissed on September 3, 2023, following an investigation that found him guilty of an ethics violation connected to the death of a delivery driver. The incident, which occurred during a protest, has reignited widespread anti-government demonstrations across the country. The protests stem from growing public discontent over economic inequality and the perks afforded to lawmakers, which were further inflamed by the release of disturbing footage showing a police vehicle striking and killing 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan last Thursday.
National police spokesman Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko announced the dismissal of officer Cosmas K Gae, citing his “unprofessional” conduct during the protest as a primary reason. Trunoyudo characterized Cosmas’ actions as a “reprehensible act,” leading to what he termed a “dishonourable dismissal” from the national police force. The specifics of Cosmas’ involvement remain unclear, though reports indicate he was present in the vehicle that fatally struck Kurniawan.
Protests Erupt Following Incident
The death of Kurniawan has become a flashpoint for protests, which have resulted in at least 10 fatalities nationwide, as reported by the state-affiliated National Commission on Human Rights. Demonstrations took place in major cities, including Jakarta, Makassar, Central Java, and Papua. The commission has also documented that at least 20 individuals are currently unaccounted for in connection with the protests, according to the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS).
In his defense, Cosmas expressed that he acted solely to maintain public order and ensure the safety of fellow officers, claiming he had no intention of causing harm. “There was no intention, honestly for God’s sake. There was no intention to cause harm to people,” he stated in remarks broadcast by Kompas TV. He mentioned that he became aware of Kurniawan’s death only through social media.
Government Response and Ongoing Tensions
In light of the unrest, police authorities have detained six additional officers related to the incident. The government’s response has included the deployment of military personnel in the capital, a move viewed as a show of force intended to quell further protests. In recent days, the demonstrations have lessened somewhat following the revocation of certain lawmakers’ perks.
As the situation continues to develop, the underlying issues of economic disparity and public dissatisfaction with the government remain at the forefront of the protests. The tragic death of Affan Kurniawan has not only drawn attention to police conduct but has also amplified calls for systemic change within Indonesia. The public’s response to these events will likely shape the political landscape in the coming weeks.
