Hodgkinson Aims for Historic 800m Record After Challenging Season
British 800 metres Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson has expressed renewed determination to pursue the longstanding world record in her event, as she concludes her 2025 season in New York City. The record, which stands at an impressive 1:53.28 and was set by Czech athlete Jarmila Kratochvilova in 1983, has proven elusive, with Hodgkinson currently ranked as the sixth-fastest woman in the 800 metres.
Renewed Ambitions Following Injury Setbacks
As Hodgkinson prepares to compete at the women-only Athlos meet in New York on September 15, 2025, she reflects on a season significantly impacted by injury. After missing most of the competitive calendar, including her inaugural “Keely Klassic” indoor meet, she remains optimistic about her future.
“It’s going to take an incredible day, everything to go right,” Hodgkinson stated, acknowledging the challenges ahead. She emphasized the importance of belief in achieving the record, adding, “We just got to believe and we believe it’s there. Everyone is getting faster, and the technology is helping us get faster.”
With a personal best of 1:54.61, Hodgkinson is hopeful that she can make a serious attempt at the world record in the future. Her recent performance at the World Championships, where she secured a bronze medal, has only fueled her ambitions further.
Inspiration from Fellow Athletes
Hodgkinson draws inspiration from fellow athletes, particularly from Faith Kipyegon, the world record-holder in the 1500 metres and a three-time Olympic champion. Kipyegon’s recent attempts to break the four-minute barrier for the mile have shown Hodgkinson the possibilities that exist in middle-distance running.
“All it takes is one person to even think it’s possible,” Hodgkinson remarked. “I had never even thought about a woman going sub-four for the mile… now it even seems more possible.”
As she steps onto the track for the Athlos meet, Hodgkinson is eager to finish her season on a high note. “I’m looking forward to getting back out there again,” she told reporters. “It’s nice to just end it here.” Her resilience and determination set a promising tone for the upcoming years as she aims to challenge the boundaries of women’s middle-distance running.
