Flick Relying on Rashford as Barcelona Faces Newcastle in UCL

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has expressed confidence in Marcus Rashford to fill the gap left by injured star Lamine Yamal as the team prepares for their UEFA Champions League opener against Newcastle on September 21, 2023. Yamal, who started the season impressively with two goals and two assists in LaLiga, will miss the match due to a hip injury sustained while on international duty with Spain.
Rashford showcased his abilities in Barcelona’s recent 6-0 victory over Valencia, contributing an assist that highlighted his skill set. Flick, who has been impressed since Rashford’s arrival from Manchester United, remarked, “I really follow Marcus since he started with Manchester United. I always said, ‘Wow! What a player he is!'” He praised Rashford’s speed and one-on-one capabilities, adding, “What I saw from him in the first weeks here is very good. I think he still has potential to show us more.”
Yamal’s absence is compounded by the unavailability of other key players. Alejandro Balde and Gavi are also sidelined, along with long-term injury concern Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Despite these setbacks, Flick believes the depth of his squad can compensate. “We all know that Lamine is not playing against Newcastle, maybe not on Sunday against Getafe,” he stated. “But we have a strong team and in his position, we have Marcus Rashford. If someone up front cannot play, he can step up and play like he showed on Sunday against Valencia.”
Flick remains optimistic about Barcelona’s prospects in the Champions League, acknowledging the competition from clubs, particularly those from the Premier League. “I’m not thinking about who the favourite is to win the Champions League this season. There are some very good teams,” he said. “What we saw against Valencia was very positive. We are playing well in all areas. With this confidence, it is important to play tomorrow.”
As Barcelona gears up for this crucial fixture, the focus will be on how Rashford can replicate his recent form on the European stage. The match against Newcastle promises to be a significant test for the Catalan side as they embark on their Champions League campaign with renewed determination.
