ERP Rates Rise at Five Singapore Locations to Combat Traffic

Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) rates in Singapore will increase by S$1 (approximately US$0.78) at five specific locations starting September 1, 2024. The change, announced by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), aims to address growing traffic congestion observed in July.

The LTA’s analysis highlighted significant traffic build-up along various stretches of expressways. To mitigate these conditions, the authority has decided to implement the S$1 increase during designated time periods at the affected locations. This adjustment is part of ongoing efforts to manage road usage effectively.

Details of Rate Changes

The specific locations and time frames for the increased ERP rates have been outlined by the LTA. While these five locations will see an uptick in charges, the rates for previously established timeslots and gantries will remain unchanged.

According to the LTA, “With these adjustments, the number of locations and timeslots charged remains lower than the number charged pre-COVID.” This indicates a strategic approach to balance road usage while prioritizing the reduction of congestion.

The authority also emphasized its commitment to closely monitor traffic conditions moving forward. Notably, the LTA is paying particular attention to traffic speeds and congestion levels along the Northbound Central Toll Expressway (CTE) and the Southbound Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), where speeds have consistently been recorded as suboptimal.

Future Adjustments and Monitoring

The LTA intends to continue evaluating traffic patterns to determine if further adjustments to ERP rates are necessary. This proactive approach aims to ensure that road users experience smoother travel times while maintaining efficient traffic flow across the network.

In conclusion, the ERP rate increase at five locations is a targeted measure to alleviate congestion and improve road conditions in Singapore. As traffic dynamics evolve, the LTA remains vigilant in assessing the effectiveness of these changes and adapting as needed to support the needs of commuters.
