China Dismisses Calls for Peace, Escalates Tensions with Japan

Beijing has disregarded international appeals for peace in the Taiwan Strait, escalating tensions by threatening countries that express support for Taiwan, according to Shen Yu-chung, Deputy Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC). His remarks come amidst rising diplomatic tensions between Japan and China following statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Takaichi recently indicated that military force in a potential conflict over Taiwan could pose a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. This assertion has drawn a sharp rebuke from China, which called for Takaichi to retract her comments. A state-run newspaper labeled her statement as Tokyo’s “first threat of force” against Beijing in 80 years.

On March 15, 2024, Sun Weidong, China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, summoned the Japanese ambassador to express Beijing’s dissatisfaction. Sun warned that Takaichi should disavow her statements, asserting that “all consequences must be borne by Japan” if it does not. He emphasized that any interference with China’s reunification efforts would result in a strong retaliatory response.

The situation intensified when Chinese Consul General in Osaka, Xue Jian, posted a threatening message on social media directed at Takaichi, stating, “If you go sticking that filthy neck where it doesn’t belong, it’s gonna get sliced right off.” This post was later deleted, but it further fueled tensions between the two nations.

At a forum in Taipei, Shen reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining the “status quo” in the Taiwan Strait, accusing China of trying to disrupt regional peace. He remarked that Beijing is ignoring international pleas regarding cross-strait relations, while also intimidating other nations over their pro-Taiwan stances.

In response to Xue’s remarks, Minoru Kihara, Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, stated that Tokyo had formally protested to Beijing. Kihara emphasized that Japan reiterated its position and clarified the intent behind Takaichi’s comments. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Chinese Ambassador Wu Jianghao to convey its strong disapproval of Xue’s statements, urging China to take appropriate measures.

Discussions on improving Sino-Japanese relations also took place at the Caixin Summit in Beijing, where Kanasugi highlighted the need for cooperation despite existing challenges. He acknowledged that as neighboring countries, Japan and China experience various difficulties but must work towards enhancing their relationship.

The ongoing tensions between China, Taiwan, and Japan underscore the complexities of regional security and diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific. As nations navigate these challenges, the potential for conflict remains a pressing concern.
