Bukit Panjang LRT Disruptions Linked to New Power System Faults

Service disruptions along the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT) network were attributed to a newly installed power monitoring system, according to the train operator SMRT. The disruptions occurred on July 20, 2023, and affected all stations on the line.
SMRT’s president, Lam Sheau Kai, explained that the “Power SCADA” (supervisory control and data acquisition) system is part of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) power renewal project aimed at enhancing safety and reliability. The system allows for remote monitoring and control of power distribution across the Bukit Panjang LRT line.
Incident Details and Investigations
The power fault, which triggered a network-wide traction power trip, was similar to an incident that occurred on July 3, 2023. Initial investigations conducted by SMRT, the LTA project team, and Schneider Electric, the system’s original equipment manufacturer, indicated that the fault in the Power SCADA system affected the emergency trip system (ETS).
The incident took place around 14:45 local time, resulting in four trains being stalled between stations. To resume services safely, the ETS was bypassed, allowing traction power to be reinstated across the line.
Mr. Lam confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway, with a full design review by the OEM contractor aimed at strengthening network stability and preventing similar occurrences in the future. He emphasized the importance of ensuring a stable traction power supply during the ongoing commissioning phase of the system.
Looking Ahead
The Bukit Panjang LRT system spans 8 kilometers, connecting residential areas in Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang to the North-South and Downtown Lines. The power renewal project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, and SMRT will continue to closely monitor the system as work progresses.
In his statements, Mr. Lam expressed gratitude to affected commuters for their patience and understanding during the disruption. He reaffirmed SMRT’s commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable service while the renewal works are underway.
