Atletico Madrid Dominates Mallorca to Secure Third in LaLiga
Atletico Madrid secured a convincing 3-0 victory against Mallorca on January 25, 2024, propelling them to third place in the LaLiga standings. The match saw goals from Alexander Sorloth, an own goal by David Lopez, and a strike from substitute Thiago Almada. With this win, Atletico now has 44 points, moving three points ahead of Villarreal, who fell to Real Madrid in a 2-0 defeat on the previous day.
As the LaLiga season intensifies, Atletico’s victory places them in a strong position as they chase the leaders. Real Madrid currently tops the table with 51 points, followed closely by Barcelona with 49 points and a game in hand. Barcelona is set to face bottom-placed Osasuna later today.
Atletico Madrid’s performance was marked by early dominance, with the team establishing control over possession from the outset. Despite facing a resolute defense, Mallorca’s goalkeeper Leo Roman made several crucial saves to keep his team in contention. However, the breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when Sorloth netted the opening goal. Following a corner taken by Julian Alvarez, a powerful volley from Marcos Llorente was parried by Roman. The rebound fell directly to Sorloth, who calmly slotted the ball home from close range.
The second goal for Atletico came in the 77th minute, further exploiting Mallorca’s defensive frailties. A low cross from Llorente was attempted to be cleared by Mateu Morey, but his clearance inadvertently struck Lopez and deflected into the net. This own goal effectively sealed Mallorca’s fate as they struggled to regain any momentum.
To cap off the impressive display, Almada added a third goal in the 87th minute. The Argentine international showcased his skill by controlling a rebound, maneuvering past two defenders, and unleashing a stunning shot that found the top corner of the net.
Mallorca currently sits precariously in 16th place with 21 points, just above the relegation zone. As the season progresses, the pressure mounts for the team to secure vital points in their quest for survival in LaLiga.
This victory not only boosts Atletico’s confidence but also demonstrates their potential as serious contenders in the league. With a strong performance under the leadership of coach Diego Simeone, the team is poised for what could be an exciting finish to the season.
