Argentine FA Names Rosario Central 2025 League Champion Amid Rule Change
In a landmark decision, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) officially declared Rosario Central the 2025 ‘League Champion’ following a significant alteration to its regulations. This announcement emerged from a meeting held on Thursday at the AFA headquarters in Buenos Aires, marking a notable shift in how the league titles are awarded.
Rosario Central wrapped up the regular season of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments with a total of 66 points, finishing four points ahead of their closest rivals, Boca Juniors. Under the previous rules, the team accumulating the highest points over the year would typically secure a spot in the prestigious Copa Libertadores but not an outright championship title.
New Title and Future Implications
The introduction of the title of ‘League Champion’ has generated excitement among the fans and players alike. World Cup winner Angel Di Maria, who plays for Rosario Central, expressed his joy, stating, “The Rosario fans must be very happy.” This title marks Di Maria’s first championship win in Argentina, adding another accolade to the club’s history, which includes seven domestic cups and one CONMEBOL Cup.
Rosario Central’s manager, Ariel Holan, also shared his gratitude, saying, “I thank AFA president Claudio Tapia and all the leadership for their recognition.” The club’s success this season reflects their strong performance and determination, culminating in a well-deserved championship.
Despite the new title, the AFA clarified that it does not create an additional spot for the Copa Libertadores or any other international tournaments. “The creation of the 2025 League Champion does not invalidate the realisation of the already established International Super Cup, Argentine Super Cup, and Champions Trophy,” the AFA stated. This means that while Rosario Central can celebrate their championship, the overall structure of international competition remains unchanged.
Upcoming Competitions and Challenges
Looking ahead, Platense, who clinched the Apertura title in June, will face the Clausura champions in the upcoming Champions Trophy. This playoff format will determine the ultimate victor among Argentina’s top teams, as the season draws to a close.
The changes implemented by the AFA indicate a willingness to adapt the framework of Argentine football, potentially enhancing the competitive landscape. As clubs and fans adjust to these new rules, the impact on future seasons will be closely monitored. The excitement surrounding Rosario Central’s achievement is sure to resonate throughout the league as teams prepare for the challenges ahead.
