47 Arrested in Singapore Raids Targeting Illegal Activities
In a series of coordinated operations from December 3 to 7, 2023, Singapore authorities arrested 47 individuals across various locations including massage parlours, public entertainment outlets, and a coffee shop. This multi-agency effort involved officers from the Tanglin Police Division, Health Sciences Authority (HSA), Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
Details of the Raids
During the four-day operation, law enforcement officials arrested 10 men and 37 women, whose ages ranged from 20 to 88. The raids targeted locations in Orchard Road, Whampoa, Toa Payoh, Novena, Balestier, Kim Keat Road, and Robertson Quay. In total, authorities seized cash and various assets during their investigation into illegal activities.
Members of the media witnessed two significant raids in Whampoa and Orchard Road. On the night of December 3, officers executed a raid at a coffee shop on Whampoa Drive. Reporters observed as officers in plain clothes mingled with patrons, where one officer laid out stacks of S$50 (approximately US$39) notes alongside additional cash. This money was seized from an elderly man, identified as an alleged bookmaker involved in illegal horse betting. Along with him, another suspected bookmaker and six punters were apprehended, with all eight questioned on-site.
Later that night, authorities conducted a raid at a karaoke outlet in the Far East Shopping Centre. Officers separated women into different rooms for investigation. Twelve women were handcuffed and taken into custody, contributing to a total of 22 arrests made at this venue alone.
Broader Operations and Ongoing Investigations
Additional raids occurred in Toa Payoh on December 3 and 4, resulting in the arrest of 11 people, all aged between 59 and 88. Authorities seized more than S$5,000 in cash and mobile phones as part of their evidence collection. At the karaoke outlet, alongside the arrests, officers from multiple agencies also targeted other public entertainment establishments along Orchard Road, leading to the detention of 26 women for violations of the Women’s Charter and the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.
As the operation extended to several massage parlours and other residential and commercial units in Novena, Balestier, Kim Keat Road, and Robertson Quay, 10 additional individuals were arrested for similar offences. The police also inspected five public entertainment venues along Orchard Road, with the SCDF participating in three of those checks.
The Tanglin Police Division is currently conducting ongoing investigations into the activities of all 47 individuals arrested. Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Cheong Chee Ming, the commander of the division, stated that the police would continue to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies to combat illicit activities. “Offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” he emphasized.
