Zverev Advances to Australian Open Semi-Finals with Victory Over Tien
Germany’s Alexander Zverev secured his spot in the semi-finals of the Australian Open after defeating American player Learner Tien in a thrilling quarter-final match on January 27, 2024. Zverev triumphed with a score of 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6(3) at Melbourne Park, continuing his campaign to reclaim the title he last contested in 2023.
The third seed, who was the runner-up to Jannik Sinner last year, showcased his powerful serving skills throughout the match, delivering a remarkable 24 aces and committing only one double fault. Zverev will now face either Carlos Alcaraz or Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals, marking his fourth appearance at this stage of the tournament.
Zverev acknowledged Tien’s impressive performance, stating, “Learner, from the baseline, was playing unbelievable. I don’t think I’ve played anyone who plays that well from the baseline for a very, very long time.” He attributed his victory in part to his strong serving, saying, “Without my 20 aces, or something like that, I probably wouldn’t have won today, so obviously very happy with my serve. And just generally happy to be back in the semis.”
The match began with Zverev taking control early on. He secured a crucial break in the sixth game of the first set when Tien sent a crosscourt backhand wide, allowing Zverev to seize the advantage.
As the second set unfolded, Tien demonstrated resilience, keeping the scoreline tight. The American edged out Zverev in the tiebreak, producing a spectacular passing shot that set him up for the set point, which he converted with enthusiasm.
In the third set, Zverev regained his rhythm, minimizing unforced errors and breaking Tien’s serve twice to take a commanding lead. The fourth set remained on serve, but Zverev maintained his composure, taking control in the tiebreak to secure the match and his place in the next round.
With this victory, Zverev not only advances further in the tournament but also reaffirms his status as a formidable contender for the Australian Open title. The semi-final match promises to be another exciting chapter in this year’s competition.
