Women to Compete at Four Hills Tournament for First Time
The Four Hills Tournament will feature a full women’s competition for the first time in its 75-year history during the 2026/27 season. This significant announcement was made by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) on January 4. Previously, women competed in the Two Nights Tour in Germany but were unable to participate in the Austrian events due to the absence of floodlights at Innsbruck’s Bergisel hill, which are necessary for night competitions.
The situation changed when the State of Tyrol, the Austrian government, the City of Innsbruck, and Ski Austria reached an agreement to finance new floodlights. This development ensures that women can now compete at all venues during the tournament, marking a pivotal shift in ski jumping.
Johan Eliasch, President of the FIS, expressed his enthusiasm for this milestone, stating, “This marks a true milestone in the history of ski jumping.” He emphasized that the introduction of women into the competition is a significant step towards closing the gender gap in winter sports.
The Four Hills Tournament is an esteemed ski jumping event comprising four World Cup competitions held annually in Germany and Austria since 1953. The inclusion of female athletes elevates the tournament’s prestige and reflects the growing recognition of women’s sports on an international platform.
As the tournament approaches its milestone anniversary, preparations are underway to ensure that both male and female competitors experience the same level of opportunity and visibility. This historic decision resonates with a broader movement in sports towards inclusivity and equality, aiming to inspire the next generation of female athletes.
With the 2026/27 season on the horizon, the excitement surrounding the tournament continues to build. The commitment from various stakeholders to enhance facilities marks a significant victory for women in winter sports and sets a precedent for future competitions. As the world of ski jumping evolves, fans can look forward to witnessing this landmark event that promises to celebrate the talent and determination of female athletes on a grand stage.
