Vondrousova Triumphs Over Rybakina to Reach US Open Quarter-Finals
Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova advanced to the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open after defeating Elena Rybakina, the ninth seed, in a tightly contested match on September 3, 2023. Vondrousova secured her victory with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, marking her return to the last eight at Flushing Meadows for the second consecutive year.
After a challenging season that saw her drop to world number 60, Vondrousova expressed her joy at reaching this stage again. “After everything I’ve been through, it’s good to be standing here again,” she said. “It’s a long way to go, but it’s been an amazing week so far. I’m incredibly happy to be here.”
The match unfolded under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Vondrousova began strongly. She took advantage of Rybakina’s inconsistent serving, with the Kazakh winning less than 50 percent of her first serves. The players exchanged breaks early in the match, but Vondrousova’s steady play allowed her to close out the first set.
In the second set, Rybakina displayed a more aggressive approach, initially taking a lead with a break. Vondrousova fought back, responding with a break of her own. Despite a missed set point, Rybakina regained her momentum, breaking Vondrousova once more to take the set 7-5, leveling the match.
As the final set commenced, Vondrousova regained her composure and broke Rybakina twice, establishing a decisive lead. She maintained her serve effectively, clinching the match with three consecutive aces, demonstrating her resilience and skill.
Vondrousova’s next challenge will come against the world number one and defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka. This upcoming encounter promises to be another thrilling match as Vondrousova seeks to continue her impressive run in the tournament.
