US Charges 20 Individuals in College and CBA Basketball Rigging Scheme
U.S. authorities have indicted 20 individuals for their alleged involvement in a scheme to rig college basketball games and those of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). The charges, detailed in a federal indictment unsealed on January 15, 2024, stem from an investigation that began in September 2022 and continued through February 2025.
The indictment was released by federal prosecutors in Philadelphia, who stated that the accused conspired to manipulate game outcomes through a practice known as “point shaving.” This form of cheating involves altering the margin of victory to benefit betting outcomes. Several individuals charged had previously faced allegations related to gambling in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Details of the Allegations
During the 2022-2023 CBA season, the defendants reportedly sought to influence men’s basketball games within the CBA. Specific universities in the United States were also targeted, including Nicholls State University, Tulane University, and Northwestern State University. Other institutions mentioned in the indictment are La Salle University, DePaul University, Robert Morris University, and the University of Southern Mississippi. Additionally, players from Kennesaw State University, Coppin State University, the University of New Orleans, Abilene Christian University, Eastern Michigan University, and Alabama State University were implicated.
The allegations include serious charges such as bribery in sporting contests and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The extent of the scheme highlights significant concerns regarding integrity in both college and professional basketball.
Legal Proceedings and Implications
The case has drawn attention not only for the number of individuals involved but also for its potential impact on the reputation of collegiate athletics and professional basketball leagues. As the legal process unfolds in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the implications of these charges could resonate through various levels of both sports involved.
Federal prosecutors are expected to present detailed evidence to support their claims, and the defendants will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations in court. The outcome of this case will likely influence future regulations and enforcement related to sports betting and the integrity of athletic competitions across the globe.
As authorities continue to investigate, the case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining fair play within sports and the necessity for robust oversight in gambling practices.
