Tilak Varma to Miss Three Weeks After Groin Surgery
India’s promising batter, Tilak Varma, will be sidelined for nearly three weeks following surgery for a groin issue. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news on January 8, 2024, detailing that Varma underwent the procedure on January 7, just a month before India’s opening match in the T20 World Cup.
The 23-year-old cricketer has been ruled out of the first three Twenty20 matches against New Zealand, which are scheduled from January 21 to January 25. According to the BCCI, Varma was discharged from the hospital on the morning of January 8 and is set to return to Hyderabad on January 9. The board reported that he is currently stable and making good progress.
Varma has made a notable impact in the T20 format, having played 40 matches for India. He has shown impressive form recently, scoring two fifties in his last three outings. The BCCI indicated that his potential return for the final two matches of the five-match T20 series against New Zealand, set for January 28 and 31, will depend on his recovery progress.
In addition to missing the T20 series, Varma was not included in India’s squad for the three One Day Internationals against New Zealand starting on January 14. This absence will be closely monitored as India prepares to defend their T20 World Cup title at home, beginning with a Group A match against the United States on February 7, 2024.
The upcoming matches are crucial for the Indian team, as they look to fine-tune their strategies and line-up ahead of the World Cup. Varma’s ability to contribute to the squad will be reassessed based on his recovery, highlighting the ongoing challenges athletes face with injuries and the importance of maintaining peak fitness ahead of significant tournaments.
