Team World surged ahead in the Laver Cup on Saturday, with American player Taylor Fritz delivering a stunning upset against world number one Carlos Alcaraz. Fritz defeated Alcaraz with a decisive score of 6-3, 6-2, propelling Team World to a commanding 9-3 lead as they approach the final day of competition.

Fritz showcased a powerful and varied game, breaking Alcaraz early to establish a 3-1 advantage in the first set. His performance was marked by impressive net play and aggressive serves, culminating in a comfortable set victory. This match marked Fritz’s first win over the Spaniard in their fourth encounter.

“The three times that I’ve played Carlos, he’s broken me in the first game … so getting out of that first game was huge,” Fritz stated. “I was playing a lot of the big points with conviction, I didn’t second guess myself and I didn’t play too safe. I played with no fear.”

Team World Extends Their Lead

Building on Fritz’s momentum, Alex De Minaur and Alex Michelsen further increased Team World’s lead by defeating Casper Ruud and Holger Rune in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. This victory came in the final match of the day and underscored Team World’s dominance in the tournament.

The Laver Cup, which mimics the competitive spirit of golf’s Ryder Cup, features teams from Europe and the rest of the world. The event is won by the first side to accumulate 13 points from a total of 24 available over three days. Points are awarded differently: one point for wins on the first day, two points for the second day, and three points for victories on the final day.

Earlier in the day, De Minaur demonstrated his skill by defeating Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-4 at the Chase Center. This victory marked De Minaur’s third win against Zverev in their 11 career meetings, helping to erase Team Europe’s early advantage. After racing to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, he highlighted the importance of a strong start against top-10 players.

“It’s a part of my game that I’ve definitely unlocked over the last two years,” De Minaur explained. “These guys, they hit the ball so hard and so big. I’ve got to find different ways to hurt them. I’ve got the ability to use my speed not only to retrieve but also sneak into the net.”

In another key match, Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina defeated Rune 6-3, 7-6(5), providing Team World with a 5-3 lead before Fritz’s pivotal win.

With just one day remaining in the tournament, Team World is on the brink of a historic victory, needing only four more points to secure the title. As the competition intensifies, all eyes will be on the final matches, where both teams will fight for glory in this prestigious event.
