Sporting Stages Late Comeback to Defeat 10-Man Marseille
In a thrilling encounter in Lisbon, Sporting CP rallied late to secure a 2-1 victory against a depleted Olympique de Marseille during their UEFA Champions League match on October 4, 2023. The win marked Sporting’s second triumph in the competition, lifting them to 11th place with six points, while Marseille, who had previously enjoyed a five-match winning streak, dropped to 18th in the Ligue 1 table with just three points.
Sporting began the match energetically, applying pressure to their opponents. However, it was Marseille who struck first. In the 14th minute, Igor Paixao capitalized on a well-placed cross from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Paixao skillfully maneuvered past his defender and curled a precise shot into the far corner, marking his third goal in as many Champions League appearances this season.
As the game progressed, Marseille appeared poised to extend their lead before halftime. They were awarded a penalty for what seemed to be a foul on Emerson Palmieri. Yet, following a VAR review, the decision was reversed, and in a dramatic turn of events, Palmieri received a second yellow card for simulation, leaving Marseille to play the remainder of the match with ten men.
With the numerical advantage, Sporting intensified their attack. The pace of Geovany Quenda became a constant threat to Marseille’s defence. Quenda’s efforts nearly resulted in a goal when he forced Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli to deflect a shot onto the post, and he subsequently denied Joao Simoes with a brilliant save.
Sporting’s persistence finally paid off in the 69th minute when Geny Catamo, introduced as a substitute, leveled the score with a low strike that stood after another VAR review dismissed an initial offside call. The hosts continued to press forward, and their efforts were rewarded again in the 86th minute when Alisson Santos cut in from the left and unleashed a deflected shot that found the top corner, sealing the comeback victory for Sporting.
In stoppage time, Sporting’s Maximiliano Araujo received a red card, but VAR intervened once more to downgrade it to a yellow, allowing Sporting to maintain their full squad on the pitch as they celebrated their hard-fought win.
This match underscored Sporting’s resilience and ability to capitalize on opportunities, while Marseille will need to regroup quickly to improve their standing in the league and reverse their recent slide.
