Scotland Triumphs 2-1 Over Belarus in World Cup Qualifiers

Scotland secured a decisive 2-1 victory over Belarus in World Cup qualifying action on October 15, 2023. With this win, Scotland temporarily ascended to the top of Group D, accumulating 10 points from four matches. The group leaders will ultimately qualify for the 2026 World Cup, while the second-placed team will enter the playoff rounds.
Belarus started the match with intensity, applying pressure from the outset. They earned three corner kicks within the first ten minutes, with a header from Pavel Zabelin narrowly missing the target. However, it was Scotland that struck first, taking the lead in the 15th minute. A well-timed through ball from Jack Hendry found Che Adams at the edge of the box, who finished with his left foot. Initially flagged for offside, a VAR review confirmed Adams was onside, allowing the goal to stand.
As the match progressed, Belarus showcased a spirited performance, reflecting a stronger showing than their current world ranking of 100th. They registered 22 shots throughout the game and came close to equalizing in the 63rd minute. Yevgeny Malashevich found the net, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR check that revealed a foul on Scott McTominay during the buildup.
Scotland extended their lead in the 84th minute, when McTominay scored from a cross delivered by Andy Robertson. This goal solidified Scotland’s advantage, despite Belarus managing to pull one back in added time through a strike from Gleb Kuchko. The loss marked Belarus’s fourth consecutive defeat in the qualifiers, eliminating them from contention for the top two spots in the group.
Looking ahead, Scotland will conclude their group campaign next month with crucial matches against Greece and Denmark. With their current momentum, they remain optimistic about securing a place in the upcoming World Cup.
