Rybakina Advances to WTA Finals After Thrilling Comeback Against Pegula
Elena Rybakina staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Friday, securing her spot in the WTA Finals title match. Rybakina will now face either Aryna Sabalenka or Amanda Anisimova for the chance to claim her first season-ending championship at the King Saud University Sports Arena in Riyadh.
The match commenced with an intense exchange of breaks, as Pegula, the 2023 runner-up, showcased her skills and established a 4-2 lead. Rybakina struggled with her accuracy, possibly due to a shoulder issue sustained during her warm-up the previous day. Despite these challenges, Rybakina expressed her determination, stating, “It was such a tough battle. It’s always difficult to play against Jessica and she started pretty well.”
Pegula ultimately secured the first set, capitalizing on Rybakina’s 25th unforced error. However, the tide shifted dramatically in the second set. Rybakina fell behind 1-4, facing the prospect of a long battle ahead. Nonetheless, she rallied, demonstrating resilience and skill to push back against Pegula’s momentum.
Rybakina managed to recover, forcing a decisive third set with a crucial performance in the 10th game. In a tightly contested final set, both players exchanged breaks. Pegula faltered at a critical moment, hitting a forehand into the net during the eighth game, which shifted the advantage to Rybakina. Remaining composed, Rybakina held serve in the following game to secure her victory.
“My serve helped me when I needed it,” Rybakina noted after the match, highlighting her impressive tally of 15 aces. “I was trying to stay focused on each point when we had some tough rallies. In the end, I managed to push myself a bit more.”
Rybakina’s triumph keeps her perfect record intact at this year’s season finale, adding another chapter to an impressive year for the Kazakh player. The upcoming match against either Sabalenka or Anisimova promises to be a thrilling contest, as Rybakina seeks to elevate her career by capturing her first title at the WTA Finals.
