Rodrygo’s Late Goal Secures Vital Win for Real Madrid Over Alaves
Real Madrid achieved a significant 2-1 victory against Deportivo Alaves on December 14, 2023, in LaLiga, effectively ending a troubling streak of losses. The win not only bolstered their position in the league but also kept them within striking distance of leaders Barcelona, now just four points ahead.
The match, held at the Mendizorrotza Stadium in Vitoria-Gasteiz, started positively for Real Madrid, who opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Kylian Mbappe, showcasing his remarkable skill, received a precise pass from Jude Bellingham, darted down the left wing, and unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner. This early goal seemed to lift the spirits of the visiting team, which had been under considerable pressure following two consecutive losses across all competitions.
Despite the early advantage, Real Madrid faced mounting pressure from Alaves, who rallied in front of a boisterous home crowd. The hosts controlled much of the first half, testing Real’s defense, which included 19-year-old academy graduate Victor Valdepenas making his senior debut at left back.
Alaves’ persistence paid off in the 68th minute when substitute Carlos Vicente, who had just entered the field, scored the equalizer. He capitalized on a long ball from Antonio Blanco, evading Real’s high defensive line. Initially ruled offside, Vicente’s goal was validated after a VAR review confirmed his timing was impeccable, much to the delight of the home fans.
Real Madrid quickly regrouped and regained their lead just eight minutes later. Vinicius Jr., demonstrating pace and determination, maneuvered past a defender on the left flank and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Rodrygo made a timely run, connecting with the cross to slide the ball into the net, securing the win for his team.
This victory provides crucial relief for manager Xabi Alonso, as Real Madrid had only achieved two wins from their previous eight matches. With this triumph, the team now stands second in the LaLiga standings with a total of 39 points, while Deportivo Alaves occupies the 12th position with 18 points.
Real Madrid’s performance showcased both their resilience and areas needing improvement. While they demonstrated the ability to score spectacular goals, the team must address their defensive vulnerabilities moving forward. The win not only boosts morale but also reaffirms their competitive presence in the league as the season progresses.
