The U.S. Men’s National Team has announced its roster for upcoming friendly matches against South Korea and Japan, with notable changes as Christian Pulisic returns while Weston McKennie has been left off the squad. The matches are scheduled to take place on September 6, 2023, in New Jersey and September 9, 2023, in Ohio.

Pulisic, who plays as a winger for AC Milan, had previously opted out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup to focus on recovery and rest. His decision garnered criticism from former U.S. soccer legends such as Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas. The U.S. team experienced a disappointing outcome at the Gold Cup, finishing as runners-up after losing 2-1 to Mexico in the final.

McKennie, a midfielder for Juventus, is unavailable for selection due to his club’s participation in the Club World Cup. He is not the only absence in the squad; Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson is also missing as he continues his rehabilitation from injury. Other players, including forward Giovanni Reyna and goalkeeper Matt Turner, were not selected for this roster.

In contrast, Sergino Dest makes his return to the national team following recovery from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury. Alongside him, winger Timothy Weah has been included, adding depth to the forward line.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasized the importance of these friendlies in strengthening the team as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. “We continue to strengthen the squad and narrow in on the pool of players who can help us achieve our goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Pochettino stated. He noted that these matches provide an opportunity for players returning from injuries to regain fitness and sharpness ahead of a busy fall schedule.

The final roster consists of 22 players, with one additional player set to be confirmed. The selected team includes:

Goalkeepers: Roman Celentano, Matt Freese, Jonathan Klinsmann
Defenders: Max Arfsten, Noahkai Banks, Tristan Blackmon, Sergino Dest, Alex Freeman, Nathan Harriel, Tim Ream, Chris Richards
Midfielders: Tyler Adams, Sebastian Berhalter, Luca de la Torre, Diego Luna, Jack McGlynn, Sean Zawadzki
Forwards: Damion Downs, Christian Pulisic, Josh Sargent, Tim Weah, Alex Zendejas

As the U.S. prepares to face two competitive opponents, the focus remains on building a cohesive and resilient team ahead of future challenges on the international stage.
