Pogacar Powers Ahead in Tour de France, Refuses to Hold Back

Tadej Pogacar continues to dominate the Tour de France, firmly establishing his position at the top with a decisive fourth stage victory. The leader of UAE Team Emirates displayed no intention of easing up on his competitors, even as they struggled in the challenging mountain stages. After his latest triumph, Pogacar emphatically rejected any notion of holding back, stating, “You cannot just back off. The team pays you to win, not to give away.”
The Slovenian’s recent performance, highlighted by a commanding time trial victory, has significantly increased his lead in the general classification. Following this latest stage, he now holds a substantial advantage of 4 minutes and 7 seconds over his closest rival, Jonas Vingegaard. This remarkable gain comes just two days after Pogacar expanded his lead over the Danish cyclist, doubling the gap in a matter of stages.
Strategic Focus Amidst Dominance
Despite his apparent superiority, Pogacar maintains a strategic mindset as the competition progresses. “The big point of the Tour was today,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of taking it stage by stage. His approach aims to defend the yellow jersey while ensuring the team remains cohesive and effective. “We can’t burn out the team – we have to be smart,” he added.
When questioned about the potential for his dominance to create tension within the peloton, Pogacar remained straightforward. “When I finish my career, I probably won’t talk to 99 percent of the peloton anyway. I’ll focus on my close friends and family,” he said. This candid reflection underscores his commitment to his sport while acknowledging the isolation that can accompany high-level competition.
Pogacar is also acutely aware of the unpredictable nature of the Tour de France. Reflecting on his previous experiences, he admitted, “In 2022 and 2023, I cracked. I had great tours, but I lost. You never know – a bad day can always come.” His acknowledgment of past difficulties highlights the mental resilience required to compete at such a high level.
Passion for Cycling and Future Aspirations
Despite his competitive edge, Pogacar expressed a deeper connection to the sport. When asked what motivates him beyond victories, he responded with a moment of introspection: “What’s the point of anything? I built my life around the bike. I met my closest friends and my fiancée through cycling. You just have to enjoy the moment – not just the victories.” This perspective reveals the personal significance of cycling in his life, beyond the accolades.
As the Tour progresses towards its conclusion in Paris, Pogacar shows no signs of slowing down or sharing the spotlight. His nickname, the ‘Baby Cannibal,’ pays homage to cycling legend Eddy Merckx, and he has the potential to emulate Merckx’s remarkable achievements. If Pogacar continues on this trajectory, he could become only the fourth rider to win the Tour de France in the year following a world title, a feat last accomplished by Greg LeMond in 1990.
With each stage, Pogacar reinforces his reputation as a formidable competitor, unwilling to relent. As the challenges of the Tour de France unfold, it remains to be seen how his leadership will shape the outcome of this prestigious event.
