Pakistan Hosts T20 Tri-Series in Rawalpindi Following Bombing

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Thursday that Rawalpindi will host a tri-nation Twenty20 international series featuring the national team of Pakistan, along with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. The series will commence on November 18, 2023, following a recent suicide bombing in Islamabad that claimed the lives of 12 individuals.

Originally, the series included five matches scheduled to take place in Lahore. However, due to security concerns stemming from the bombing, the PCB revised the schedule to ensure the safety of players and officials. The decision was made in consultation with Sri Lanka Cricket and Zimbabwe Cricket, who collaborated on the operational and match requirements to facilitate a secure environment for the tournament.

The tri-series will follow two remaining one-day internationals between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, also taking place in Rawalpindi on November 17 and November 19. Several cricketers from Sri Lanka had expressed a desire to return home for safety reasons after the bombing. Nonetheless, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board issued a firm directive for its players to remain in Pakistan to participate in the series.

Historical Context and Security Improvements

Rawalpindi and Islamabad are twin cities located approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) apart. The PCB has faced challenges in convincing international teams to tour Pakistan since a 2009 attack by armed assailants on a bus carrying Sri Lankan cricket players in Lahore. That incident resulted in injuries to at least six players and effectively halted international cricket in the country for several years, forcing Pakistan to play its home matches in the United Arab Emirates.

Since then, security conditions have improved in major urban centers. Notably, Sri Lanka’s return to Pakistan for a Test series in 2019 marked a significant step in restoring international cricket in the country.

The tri-series initially included Afghanistan, but the Afghanistan Cricket Board withdrew following the deaths of three local cricketers in military strikes in Paktika province last month. Zimbabwe was subsequently invited to replace Afghanistan in the tournament.

The series will culminate with the final match on November 29, 2023, offering teams crucial preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled for next year in India and Sri Lanka.
