Newcastle’s Away Struggles Continue with 3-1 Defeat at Brentford
Newcastle United’s dismal away form in the Premier League persisted on October 29, 2023, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. The match turned dramatically in the second half when defender Dan Burn received a red card after conceding a penalty, leading to a pivotal moment in the game.
Newcastle initially took the lead in the 27th minute with a goal from Harvey Barnes, who skillfully evaded two defenders before finding the net. However, Brentford equalized in the 56th minute when Kevin Schade scored with a header, capitalizing on a long throw from Michael Kayode. The home team continued to apply pressure and was awarded a penalty in the 78th minute after Burn fouled Dango Ouattara. Igor Thiago converted the penalty, giving Brentford a 2-1 lead.
With just over 15 minutes remaining, Burn’s second yellow card left Newcastle in a difficult situation. The team made a substitution, bringing on goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to replace Nick Pope after the penalty decision was confirmed by VAR. Despite the changes, Brentford sealed the victory with a second goal from Thiago in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
This loss marked Newcastle’s third consecutive defeat on the road in the league, leaving them without a win away from home this season. Their record now stands at five losses and four draws in the top flight since April, contrasting sharply with their improved performance at home and in other competitions.
Brentford’s victory allowed them to move up to 12th place in the league standings. Throughout the match, they maintained 54 percent possession and recorded five shots, compared to Newcastle’s two attempts. The home side’s resilience was evident as they bounced back from an early setback to secure a convincing win.
While Newcastle struggled, Brentford showcased their strength, having previously triumphed over notable opponents such as Liverpool, Manchester United, and Aston Villa this season. The absence of Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa, out injured since his transfer from Brentford, did not go unnoticed, with the home crowd expressing their sentiments regarding his departure.
The defeat has raised concerns for Newcastle as they continue to grapple with their away form. The team’s inability to secure points on the road could have significant implications for their aspirations in the league moving forward.
