Newcastle United Signs Defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan
Newcastle United has secured the signing of German defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, the Premier League club announced late on Tuesday. While the financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, British media reports indicate that Newcastle paid approximately £34.6 million (around $46.69 million) for the 24-year-old player.
Thiaw played a pivotal role in Milan’s defensive unit last season, featuring in 31 matches across all competitions. However, his playing time diminished towards the end of the Serie A season, as Milan finished a disappointing eighth in the league standings. In addition to his club commitments, Thiaw has represented Germany at the international level, earning three caps in 2023.
Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We’re really pleased to have Malick on board. He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options.”
This marks Newcastle’s third signing during the summer transfer window. The club previously added winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who joined on loan from Southampton. These strategic moves come as Newcastle seeks to build a competitive squad following their fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season, which secured them a spot in the prestigious Champions League.
Looking ahead, Newcastle United will kick off their Premier League campaign with an away match against Aston Villa on Saturday, August 12, 2023. The club’s fans will be eager to see how Thiaw and the new signings contribute to their ambitions for the upcoming season.
