Max Jorgensen Ready to Step Up as Wallabies Fullback Against Argentina

Max Jorgensen is prepared to step into the fullback role for the Wallabies if required, following a season-ending knee injury to Tom Wright. This injury occurred during the team’s recent 30-22 loss to South Africa, creating an opportunity for Jorgensen as the Wallabies face Argentina in the Rugby Championship this weekend in Townsville.

Jorgensen’s Versatility on Display

Having impressed as a winger in his early test career, Jorgensen expressed confidence in his ability to adapt to the fullback position. At just 21 years old, he noted, “I’ve played my fair share of fullback… There’s a lot of boys in the squad who can play fullback.” He mentioned other candidates for the position, including Andrew Kellaway, who recently played the fullback position against South Africa, and Harry Potter.

Jorgensen’s performances this season have significantly elevated his reputation. His notable contributions include scoring in the decisive 22-12 victory over the British & Irish Lions and adding another try in the Wallabies’ 38-22 triumph over the Springboks in Johannesburg. Reflecting on his dual role, he stated, “I love playing 15, but I’ve been loving playing on the wing as well. I’m happy in either position, as long as I’m playing and in the team.”

Learning from Past Challenges

Jorgensen made his test debut last year during the Rugby Championship and was a part of the squad when Argentina handed the Wallabies a heavy 67-27 defeat in Santa Fe. He acknowledged that the team has evolved since that game. “I think we’re a very different team now to what we were a year ago,” he remarked. He noted that the team has transformed into a more consistent unit, capable of maintaining performance throughout the entire match.

He highlighted the importance of playing a full 80 minutes, reflecting on past games where the team struggled after the first half. “We were only in it for about 40 minutes and then lost it,” he explained. “But we’ve developed so much as a squad and as a team since then, so we’re ready to go this weekend.”

As the Wallabies prepare for their match against the Pumas, the team aims to build on their recent performances and demonstrate their growth on the international stage. The upcoming clash promises to be a significant test, not only for Jorgensen but for the entire squad as they look to solidify their position in the Rugby Championship.
