Manchester United Triumphs Over Brighton, Sunderland Shocks Chelsea
Manchester United secured a thrilling 4-2 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on March 2, 2024, propelling the team into the top four of the Premier League. The match showcased United’s emerging consistency, highlighted by goals from Matheus Cunha, Casemiro, and a brace from Bryan Mbeumo. Meanwhile, in a surprising turn of events, Sunderland claimed a 2-1 win over Chelsea, moving into second place in the league standings.
United capitalized on their home advantage early in the match. Cunha opened the scoring with a stunning strike in the 24th minute, sending the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Just ten minutes later, Casemiro doubled the lead with a deflected shot that left Brighton’s goalkeeper scrambling. Mbeumo then added a third for United, solidifying their dominance on the pitch.
Despite the commanding lead, Brighton fought back, with Danny Welbeck scoring from a free kick to narrow the deficit. The game took a tense turn when Charalampos Kostoulas scored a stoppage-time header, leaving United momentarily vulnerable. However, in a decisive moment, Mbeumo sealed the victory with an impressive strike into the roof of the net, ensuring the three points remained with the home side.
“I enjoy it a lot here,” Mbeumo told Sky Sports after the match. “It hasn’t been easy at the start. It’s a new environment, a new expectation but I think with the link up with the team, everything is going the right way.”
Sunderland’s Late Show Stuns Chelsea
Sunderland’s remarkable performance continued with a late winner against Chelsea, as substitute Chemsdine Talbi curled in a goal deep into stoppage time. The match began with Chelsea taking an early lead, as Alejandro Garnacho scored his first goal for the London club in the fourth minute. However, Sunderland quickly equalized through Wilson Isidor in the 22nd minute.
As the match seemed destined for a draw, Talbi found the back of the net with a low shot after receiving a pass from fellow substitute Brian Brobbey, marking his first goal for Sunderland.
“It’s a good performance, especially after the early goal,” Sunderland coach Regis Le Bris stated. “We won three points. We are happy with the way we played. It is important to grab this opportunity when possible.”
Chelsea’s defeat left them languishing in eighth place in the table, while Sunderland’s victory reinforced their strong return to the Premier League.
In another match, Newcastle United clinched victory over Fulham with a last-minute goal from captain Bruno Guimaraes. After Jacob Murphy opened the scoring in the 18th minute, Fulham’s Sasa Lukic equalized in the second half. However, Guimaraes pounced on a rebound in stoppage time to secure the win, lifting Newcastle to 11th place, while Fulham fell to 16th.
“Late goals don’t just affect the game you’ve won, they affect mood and belief going forward,” said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. “It can have a big knock-on effect. We’ve had heartbreak the other way. This felt like a massive moment for us. We found a way to win.”
As the Premier League season progresses, the performances of teams like Manchester United and Sunderland signal a competitive race for the top positions. With Liverpool set to face Brentford later in the day, the outcome of the weekend’s fixtures will continue to shape the landscape of English football.
