SINGAPORE: Loh Kean Yew’s bid for his first title at the India Open concluded on January 17, 2024, as he was defeated by Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the men’s singles semi-finals. The eighth-seeded Singaporean lost in straight games, with scores of 18-21 and 20-22, at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi.

This match marked Loh’s ninth encounter with the world number four, Christie, and he remains winless against the Indonesian. Loh initially surged ahead, establishing a commanding 13-5 lead in the first game. Yet, Christie showcased his skill and resilience, leveling the score at 16-16 before securing the first set.

Match Highlights and Loh’s Journey

In the second game, Loh once again demonstrated a strong start, holding a slight two-point lead at the interval. However, Christie seized control at 13-13 and maintained his advantage, despite Loh’s attempts to mount a late comeback. Ultimately, Christie secured his place in the final, where he will face either Lin Chun Yi or Victor Lai.

Christie’s performance at the tournament has been impressive, as he has won all his matches in straight games. Prior to defeating Loh, he eliminated Christo Popov, the winner of the BWF World Tour Finals, showcasing his current form.

Loh’s journey through the tournament has been arduous, with each of his matches going the distance. Notably, in the quarter-finals, he achieved a significant victory against Thailand’s world number two, Kunlavut Vitidsarn, marking his first win over Vitidsarn since 2015.

Looking Ahead

In 2022, Loh reached the final of the India Open, where he faced home favorite Lakshya Sen, but ultimately fell short. The defeat to Christie underscores both the challenges he faces on the international stage and the competitive nature of the sport.

As Christie prepares for the final, he has established himself as a formidable opponent early in the season, having previously reached the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open. His current form sets the stage for an exciting conclusion to the India Open.
