Liverpool’s Ekitike Uncertain for Key Arsenal Clash
Liverpool is facing uncertainty regarding the availability of striker Hugo Ekitike ahead of their crucial Premier League match against league leaders Arsenal on January 11, 2024. Arne Slot, the team’s manager, expressed concerns as Ekitike has yet to return to training following a hamstring injury. The French forward, who has netted eight league goals this season, missed Liverpool’s recent 2-2 draw against Fulham due to what Slot described as a slight injury.
Slot noted the urgency of the situation, stating, “He hasn’t trained with us up until now. Let’s see if he can train with us today.” The quick turnaround between matches leaves little time for recovery, and Slot acknowledged that Ekitike might need one or two additional days before being fit to play.
The potential absence of Ekitike poses another challenge for Slot, who is already grappling with injuries to key players. Alexander Isak is sidelined due to a leg fracture, while Mohamed Salah is unavailable as he is on international duty for the Africa Cup of Nations. In light of these setbacks, Slot may once again rely on Cody Gakpo to lead the attack. Gakpo has contributed five goals and three assists in the Premier League this season, and his experience could be vital as Liverpool aims to disrupt Arsenal’s title ambitions.
Despite the injury woes, Liverpool approaches the north London fixture with a nine-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Slot, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the number of draws in that run, saying, “It is nine games unbeaten but we have definitely had two draws too many.” He acknowledged the team’s current position, stating, “Where are we? I think I’ve said so many times that the answer to that question is we aren’t where we want to be, but I feel we have a very talented squad.”
As Liverpool prepares for this important match, the absence of Ekitike would be a significant blow. The team trails Arsenal by 14 points in the league standings, making the upcoming clash a critical opportunity to gain ground. Slot remains hopeful, emphasizing that if all players are fit and ready, they can achieve remarkable results.
