Liverpool Defeats Wolves, Sets Record for Winless Start in Premier League
Liverpool secured a vital 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 27, propelling them into the top four of the Premier League table. The win also marked an unfortunate milestone for Wolves, as they now hold the record for the longest winless start in Premier League history, with just two points from 18 matches.
The match began with both teams showing determination, but it was Liverpool that broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Ryan Gravenberch found the net after a well-executed move, with Jeremie Frimpong cutting the ball back for the midfielder to strike into the bottom corner. Just one minute later, Florian Wirtz doubled Liverpool’s lead, scoring his first goal for the club by connecting with a through ball from Hugo Ekitike and deftly placing it past Wolves’ goalkeeper José Sá.
Wolves managed to pull one back in the second half, showing resilience despite their difficult season. In the 51st minute, a header from Tolu Arokodare was parried by Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker, only for Santiago Bueno to react quickly and finish the rebound. This moment offered a glimmer of hope for Wolves, but Liverpool maintained control for the remainder of the match.
The victory left Liverpool with 32 points from 18 games, marking an important step in their pursuit of a strong finish this season. Conversely, Wolves’ struggle continues as they remain at the bottom of the table, grappling with the ongoing challenges of the campaign.
This match highlighted the contrasting fortunes of both clubs. Liverpool demonstrated their attacking prowess, while Wolves faced mounting pressure to turn their season around. With the Premier League season still in its early stages, both teams will be looking to build momentum in the coming weeks.
