Kostoulas’ Stoppage Time Wonder Secures Draw for Brighton
In a thrilling encounter at the Amex Stadium, Brighton & Hove Albion managed to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw against Bournemouth, thanks to a stunning overhead kick from Greek teenager Charalampos Kostoulas during stoppage time on January 19, 2024. The match seemed destined to end in defeat for Brighton as Bournemouth took the lead with a controversial penalty, but Kostoulas’ exceptional goal salvaged a crucial point for his team.
Bournemouth’s Marcus Tavernier put his side ahead in the 32nd minute after a review by referee Paul Tierney led to a penalty decision. Initially, Tierney had booked Bournemouth’s Amine Adli for diving. However, after consulting the VAR monitor, he determined that Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen had made contact with Adli, prompting the penalty call. Tavernier confidently converted the spot-kick, seemingly setting Bournemouth on course for their second consecutive Premier League win.
Brighton began the match with energy, dominating possession and creating early chances. However, their momentum faded, allowing Bournemouth to capitalize. Just before halftime, Bournemouth nearly extended their lead when Evanilson struck the post and later headed another opportunity wide.
As the second half progressed, fatigue began to show in the Bournemouth squad. They retreated deeper into their own half, struggling to maintain their lead. Brighton continued to push forward, and their perseverance paid off when Kostoulas entered the game as a substitute. In a moment of brilliance, the 18-year-old executed a remarkable overhead kick, leveling the match in the dying moments.
This goal marked Kostoulas’ second of the season and his first since October 2023. His late strike not only showcased his talent but also highlighted the resilience of Brighton, who remain in 12th place in the Premier League standings with 30 points from 22 matches. Bournemouth, on the other hand, sits in 15th place with 27 points, reflecting their ongoing struggle for consistency this season.
The match served as a reminder of the unpredictability of football, where moments of individual brilliance can change the course of a game. Both teams will now look to build on this performance as they navigate the remainder of the season in search of vital points.
