Former England fast bowler James Anderson and 17-year-old Rocky Flintoff, son of ex-England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, have been selected as wildcard picks for The Hundred 2025. The league announced these selections on Tuesday, highlighting their significance ahead of the competition’s fifth season, which is set to commence on August 5, 2025.

Anderson, who retired from international cricket in July 2022, was initially left out of the original draft for The Hundred. However, he secured his place with the Manchester Originals during the wildcard selections. At 42 years old, Anderson has made a notable return to T20 cricket this year after an 11-year absence, taking 14 wickets in just eight matches for Lancashire in the T20 Blast.

Rocky Flintoff will join the Northern Superchargers under the guidance of his father, Andrew Flintoff. This opportunity marks a significant step for the young cricketer, who seeks to make his mark in the professional arena alongside his father.

Both players were part of a group of 32 athletes chosen in the wildcard selections. Anderson expressed enthusiasm about joining the Manchester Originals, stating, “I’m really looking forward to The Hundred, and I’m really happy to be part of the Manchester Originals squad. I’ve loved my time with Lancashire this season, so I’m excited to have the opportunity to add value in The Hundred.”

He also noted the unique atmosphere of The Hundred, mentioning, “It does attract a slightly different crowd, a lot of younger people and families, and you can’t underestimate how important that is for our game.” Anderson is poised to make history; if he participates in this season, he will become the second-oldest player in the competition’s history, following Imran Tahir, who played at 43 years and 149 days in 2022.

Joining Anderson in the Manchester Originals squad are notable players such as Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, and Josh Tongue, along with international talents Heinrich Klaasen, Noor Ahmad, and Rachin Ravindra. The inclusion of Anderson and Rocky Flintoff adds a compelling narrative to the upcoming season, promising excitement for fans and participants alike.

As anticipation builds for The Hundred, the selection of these wildcard players underscores the league’s commitment to blending experience with youthful talent, ensuring a vibrant and competitive atmosphere for cricket enthusiasts.
