India has finalized its 15-member squad for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup, set to take place from February 7 to March 8, 2024, across various venues in India and Sri Lanka. In a notable decision, Test and one-day captain Shubman Gill has been left out of the lineup, while wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been reintroduced to the team.

Gill’s exclusion follows a challenging run in T20 Internationals, where he has not registered a half-century in his last 18 innings. His recent absence due to a foot injury sustained before the match against South Africa further impacted his selection. In his place, Sanju Samson stepped up, delivering a strong performance with a brisk 37 runs as the opening partner to Abhishek Sharma during the recent game in Ahmedabad.

Kishan’s return to the squad comes on the back of an impressive display in domestic cricket. He led Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring a century in the final against Haryana. His performance underscores his ability to contribute significantly in high-pressure situations, making him a valuable asset for the national team.

Key Players and Strategy

The Indian squad will also feature renowned players such as Jasprit Bumrah, who will lead the pace attack alongside left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh. The spin department will be under the guidance of Varun Chakaravarthy, supported by left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. The team will rely heavily on Hardik Pandya, their leading seam-bowling all-rounder, to fulfill a crucial role in their title defense.

The same roster will compete in a five-match home T20 series against New Zealand next month, providing an opportunity for the players to fine-tune their strategies before heading into the World Cup.

India’s squad for the T20 World Cup is as follows: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (vice-captain), Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar, and Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper).

This selection reflects India’s strategic focus as they aim to reclaim the T20 World Cup title, building on a strong foundation of talent and experience.
