Gennady Golovkin Announces Candidacy for World Boxing Presidency
Kazakhstan’s former middleweight world champion, Gennady Golovkin, announced his candidacy for the presidency of World Boxing on Friday. Golovkin, who won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, aims to lead the organization as it seeks to establish its role in the global boxing landscape. His election bid comes after his appointment as president of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee in 2024.
Competing against Golovkin is Mariolis Charilaos, who served as the President of the Hellenic Boxing Federation from 2021 to 2025. The election is scheduled for November 23, 2024, during the World Boxing Congress in Rome, Italy. The current president, Boris van der Vorst, announced in September that he would not seek re-election. He cited the demanding nature of leading the newly established organization and extensive travel commitments as reasons for his decision.
World Boxing was formed in 2023, stepping in as the sport’s global governing body after the Russian-led International Boxing Association (IBA) lost its recognition. The new organization faces significant challenges ahead, particularly in securing boxing’s future in the Olympics following the 2024 Paris Games.
“Our mission for 2026 is clear: to achieve full IOC recognition and to guarantee our place in Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032,” Golovkin emphasized in his statement. The 43-year-old retired from boxing three years ago but left an impressive legacy with a record of 345 wins in 350 amateur fights and multiple middleweight world titles.
As the election approaches, the future direction of World Boxing will be shaped by the outcome. Golovkin’s leadership could play a crucial role in navigating the organization through the complexities of international recognition and Olympic participation.
