Fleetwood Anticipates U.S. Team’s Drive for Revenge in Ryder Cup

As the Ryder Cup approaches, Tommy Fleetwood is ready for a fierce competition at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. The English golfer expects the United States team to come out with a strong desire for revenge following their loss two years ago in Rome, where Fleetwood played a pivotal role in securing Europe’s victory.
Fleetwood arrives at this year’s event buoyed by his recent success, having claimed his first PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship last month after 164 attempts. His growing confidence and competitive spirit make him one of Europe’s most formidable players, particularly on the challenging Long Island course.
Emotional Stakes for Both Teams
With the Ryder Cup’s storied history, emotions run high, and Fleetwood recognizes the psychological edge that comes with past defeats. He stated, “When you’ve lost one, yeah, of course, you have a chip on your shoulder. You have that feeling of hurt.” His experience of suffering a heavy loss to the Americans at Whistling Straits in 2021, where Europe fell 19-9, adds to the narrative of rivalry and redemption.
Reflecting on that defeat, Fleetwood emphasized the motivation drawn from watching the American team celebrate their victory. “Watching those guys celebrate when you know you didn’t feel like you didn’t do yourselves justice, I think is one of the most motivating things you can have,” he explained. This drive has fueled Fleetwood and his teammates as they prepare for another showdown.
The Americans will aim to leverage their home advantage at Bethpage Black, a course known for its enthusiastic crowd. Historically, no away team has triumphed in the Ryder Cup since Europe’s stunning comeback at the Miracle at Medinah in Illinois in 2012. Fleetwood acknowledges that the U.S. players will also carry a burden of expectation, wanting to deliver a strong performance in front of their supporters.
Looking Ahead to Competition
“Of course, the American team will have similar sort of feelings,” Fleetwood noted. “They’ll have been hurt from last time, and they’ll come here and want to win and be at home and win in front of their home crowd. And that’s just as it should be.”
As the excitement builds for this year’s Ryder Cup, the clash of emotions, rivalries, and national pride promises to deliver a thrilling experience for players and fans alike. With Fleetwood’s competitive spirit and the U.S. team’s quest for redemption, the stage is set for an unforgettable tournament filled with high stakes and intense competition.
