FIFA Relocates Women’s Refugee Tournament to Morocco
FIFA has announced the relocation of its tournament featuring the Afghanistan women’s refugee team from the United Arab Emirates to Morocco. The friendly competition, titled “FIFA Unites: Women’s Series,” is set to commence on October 29, 2023, and includes teams from the UAE, Chad, and Libya.
This tournament was initially scheduled to take place in Dubai from October 23-29. The Afghanistan women’s refugee team was formed in response to the Taliban’s ban on women’s sports following their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. Many players had to flee the country due to fears of persecution.
In a statement, FIFA expressed gratitude to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FMRF) for its support in hosting the event. The governing body reinforced its commitment to ensuring the tournament’s success. Additionally, the Afghanistan women’s refugee team has adopted a new official name, “Afghan Women United,” after consultations with FIFA officials.
Background on Afghan Women’s Football
Before the Taliban’s resurgence, Afghanistan had a vibrant women’s football scene, with 25 players under contract. Most of these athletes have since relocated to countries such as Australia, where they continue to pursue opportunities in sports. The men’s football team in Afghanistan remains active, competing on the international stage.
The relocation of the tournament to Morocco underscores FIFA’s ongoing efforts to support women’s football, particularly in regions experiencing significant challenges. The new host country provides a platform for these athletes to showcase their skills and resilience, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and empowerment in sports.
The tournament’s format will allow for friendly matches among the participating teams, offering a unique opportunity for players to gain experience and visibility. As the world watches, the Afghan Women United team aims to demonstrate their talent and determination on the international stage.
FIFA’s initiative not only highlights the plight of Afghan female athletes but also reinforces the organization’s commitment to promoting women’s sports globally. The upcoming matches in Morocco will serve as a testament to the athletes’ strength and the unity of women in football, transcending borders and adversity.
