FIA Unveils New Livery Rules to Enhance F1 Car Differentiation
The FIA’s Formula One commission has approved new regulations aimed at enhancing the visual appeal of race cars. During a meeting in London on March 15, 2024, the commission established that all Formula One cars must feature at least 55 percent of their surface area covered by painted or stickered liveries by the 2026 season. This decision is a response to recent trends where teams have stripped bodywork down to bare carbon fibre to reduce weight, resulting in a less distinctive appearance on the track.
The objective of these new livery guidelines is to ensure that cars are visually differentiated from one another, making it easier for fans and viewers to identify teams during races. The FIA noted that certain teams had previously left sections of their cars unpainted, which raised concerns that this practice could continue with upcoming changes in engine and aerodynamic regulations.
In addition to the livery changes, the commission announced a significant update regarding racing numbers. Drivers will now have the option to change their racing numbers throughout their careers, moving away from the previous requirement to keep the number they initially chose. This flexibility allows drivers to select numbers that hold personal significance, even if their preferred choice is not available at the start of their careers.
The FIA also indicated that a comprehensive set of refinements to the technical, sporting, financial, and operational regulations for the 2026 season will be presented to the World Motor Sport Council next month. Among the topics discussed was the introduction of mandatory two pit stops during grand prix races, although no agreement was reached on this proposal. Further discussions are expected to continue into next year.
These developments mark a pivotal moment for Formula One, as the sport prepares for a new era of regulations that not only focus on performance but also on enhancing the spectator experience.
