Fauja Singh, Oldest Marathon Runner, Dies at 114 in Hit-and-Run
Fauja Singh, recognized as the oldest marathon runner and the first centenarian to complete a full marathon, has died at the age of 114. Singh was tragically struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident near his village in Bias, Punjab, India, according to local media reports. The incident occurred around 15:30 IST as he was attempting to cross the road.
Born in 1911, Singh gained international acclaim after completing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2011 at the age of 100. He had previously achieved his best marathon time at the same event in 2003, finishing the race in an impressive five hours and 40 minutes. Despite his remarkable achievements, Singh was not entered into the Guinness Book of World Records due to the absence of a birth certificate, as records were not maintained in India during his birth year.
The news of Singh’s passing prompted tributes from around the world. Khushwant Singh, his biographer, expressed his sorrow on social media platform X, stating, “My ‘Turbaned Tornado’ is no more.” He confirmed the circumstances of Singh’s death and expressed his condolences, saying, “Rest in peace, my dear Fauja.”
Local authorities are currently investigating the incident, as efforts are underway to identify the vehicle that fled the scene.
A Life of Resilience and Achievement
Fauja Singh’s journey into competitive running began later in life. After settling in London, he took up running at the age of 89, demonstrating extraordinary determination and resilience. Throughout his running career, he participated in numerous full marathons and 10 km races, ultimately retiring from competitive running in 2013.
His achievements on the track inspired many, and Singh’s legacy as an exceptional athlete continues to resonate. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences on social media, stating, “He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world.”
Fauja Singh’s remarkable legacy as a pioneer in the marathon community will not be forgotten. He epitomized the spirit of perseverance and inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams, regardless of age.
