England’s Kildunne Shines in Semi-Final Victory Over France
England’s Ellie Kildunne delivered a standout performance in the semi-final of the Women’s World Cup on September 30, 2023, leading her team to a decisive 35-17 victory against France at Ashton Gate in Bristol. This match marked a significant moment for Kildunne, who had not yet made a considerable impact in the tournament prior to this game. Her two individual tries were pivotal in securing England’s spot in the final against Canada next Saturday.
The match presented England with its toughest challenge of the tournament, facing a determined French side. Kildunne wasted no time in asserting her presence, scoring England’s first try just five minutes into the game. She showcased her speed and agility, racing down the left wing before cutting inside to finish between the posts.
With England leading 21-12 in the closing minutes, Kildunne struck again. Her remarkable second try involved another dazzling run, where she deftly dodged defenders and sprinted diagonally across the field, leaving French players trailing behind. This impressive display earned her the player-of-the-match award, drawing admiration from both teammates and coaches.
England’s head coach, John Mitchell, praised Kildunne’s abilities, stating, “She’s special, isn’t she? She deserves her accolades as last year’s World Player of the Year. She’s still very, very young… She’s a very humble girl.” Mitchell emphasized the importance of supporting Kildunne as she navigates the pressures of stardom.
Captain Zoe Aldcroft echoed Mitchell’s sentiments, noting Kildunne’s explosive talent. “Ellie is absolutely electric; she can make something out of nothing,” Aldcroft said. “There’s no doubt that she was going to keep going and get over that line. She was fantastic this evening.”
As England prepares to compete for its third World Cup title against Canada, concerns linger regarding Kildunne’s fitness. She appeared to experience discomfort during the final moments of the match. Mitchell acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding her condition, stating, “Really not sure. We’ll need to go through the medical process… At this point in time, there’s nothing being sent my way. Normally it is pretty early, so, fingers crossed.”
The upcoming final promises to be an exciting encounter, with Kildunne’s performance setting a high bar for her teammates. As England looks to secure another championship, the spotlight will undoubtedly remain on Kildunne, whose journey continues to inspire both fans and fellow players alike.
