England’s Jofra Archer Out of Ashes; Ollie Pope Dropped for Fourth Test
England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the ongoing Ashes series due to a side strain, marking a significant blow for the struggling team. The injury occurred just ahead of the fourth Test against Australia, scheduled for Boxing Day in Melbourne. In a move to bolster the squad, England has also opted to drop batter Ollie Pope from the lineup.
Archer had been a standout performer for England during the tour, taking nine wickets, including a notable five-wicket haul in Adelaide. His contributions extended beyond bowling, as he also scored essential runs, achieving his maiden fifty in the same match. With the injury occurring just months before the Twenty20 World Cup in February and March, concerns about his recovery and availability are growing.
England captain Ben Stokes praised Archer’s commitment, stating, “The effort that he’s put in over these three games has been exceptional.” He added that there were several questions surrounding Archer’s fitness prior to the tour, but the bowler has proven his dedication to the team.
In light of Archer’s absence, Gus Atkinson from Surrey has been called up to fill the void. The team also welcomes Jacob Bethell, who will bat at number three. The decision to drop Pope comes after a disappointing run of form, with his highest score of just 46 in six Ashes innings. In contrast, opener Ben Duckett retains his place despite struggling himself; he has only managed 97 runs in six innings with a highest score of 29.
As if the Ashes campaign were not challenging enough, Rob Key, England’s team director, revealed that the management will investigate reports of excessive drinking by players during a break between the second and third Tests. This scrutiny adds pressure to an already beleaguered squad.
Stokes expressed his concern for the mental well-being of his players amid the ongoing media attention regarding their performance and behavior. “The mental health of the lads is my main priority,” he stated, indicating a commitment to supporting his team during this tumultuous period.
The England XI for the fourth Test will feature: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue. As they head into the match, the team is focused on restoring pride in the series, which currently sees them trailing 3-0 in this five-Test contest.
