England Selects Bashir and Potts for Final Ashes Test in Sydney
England has called up spinner Shoaib Bashir and seamer Matthew Potts for the concluding Ashes test against Australia, commencing on January 7, 2024. This decision follows the injury of fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who sustained a left hamstring injury during England’s victory in the fourth test in Melbourne. Atkinson’s situation marks the third instance of an English fast bowler, following Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, having their Ashes campaign cut short due to injury.
With the pitch conditions at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) typically favoring spinners, the inclusion of Bashir could be significant. However, adverse weather conditions are anticipated, with storms and rain potentially impacting the first two days of play. This uncertainty means that Bashir’s opportunity to make his 20th test appearance is not guaranteed.
Despite the earlier setbacks in the series, England enters this match with renewed confidence after their recent win in Melbourne, which concluded in a thrilling two-day contest. The team is seeking to regain momentum, having lost the chance to reclaim the Ashes urn following three consecutive defeats.
Pitch Conditions and Team Selection
Chief curator Adam Lewis expressed optimism regarding the pitch for the upcoming test, indicating that conditions could support a full five-day match. “You want to see a green tinge three days out,” Lewis commented on Friday. “If you’re not seeing any live grass three days out, then that’s when it’s a worry. I’m really comfortable with where we’re sitting.” He noted that sunlight in the days leading up to the match could reduce the greenness of the pitch, which is currently in a favorable state.
The full England squad for the fifth Ashes test includes Ben Stokes (captain), Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), and Josh Tongue.
As the Ashes series reaches its climax, anticipation builds for what promises to be a critical test match, with both teams looking to assert their dominance.
