Egypt Advances to Cup of Nations Quarter-Finals After Thrilling Win
Egypt secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations following a dramatic 3-1 extra-time victory against Benin on January 5, 2024. The match, held in Agadir, Morocco, showcased the resilience of the seven-time champions as they battled back after conceding a late equalizer.
Marwan Attia opened the scoring for Egypt in the 69th minute, delivering a stunning strike from 30 yards that found the back of the net. However, Benin responded with determination, forcing the game into extra time when Jodel Dossou netted the equalizer late in regulation.
As the match progressed into extra time, Egypt found renewed energy. Defender Yasser Ibrahim made his mark by scoring his first international goal in the 97th minute. He connected with a precise cross from Attia, directing a powerful header from 15 yards that looped into the top corner of the net, restoring Egypt’s lead.
In the dying moments of the match, Mohamed Salah broke away and secured the victory with a third goal, sealing Egypt’s progression to the next round. The final whistle confirmed their hard-fought success and set the stage for an exciting quarter-final showdown.
Egypt will now face the winner of the upcoming match between the defending champions, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso. This quarter-final clash is scheduled to take place in Agadir on Saturday.
The victory not only highlights Egypt’s tenacity but also underscores their status as a formidable contender in the tournament. With a solid performance against Benin, they will look to continue their pursuit of an eighth Africa Cup of Nations title.
