Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, expressed optimism regarding injured captain Pat Cummins and his anticipated participation in the upcoming Ashes series. Despite a lower back injury that has sidelined Cummins since Australia’s tour of the West Indies earlier this year, McDonald believes the fast bowler can still play a significant role.

In an interview with Australian radio station SEN, McDonald emphasized the advantage of time in the lead-up to the Ashes, which are scheduled to begin in Perth on November 21, 2023. He noted, “If it happened any closer (to the Ashes) then you would have to be making key decisions around what it all looks like. But we have got time, a lot more information to come, and as I said, we’re really hopeful that he will take a key part in the Ashes.”

Cummins will miss Australia’s white-ball series against New Zealand and India in October as he continues his recovery. McDonald clarified that the coaching staff has not yet established a timeline for Cummins’ return to international cricket. He acknowledged that they do not expect Cummins or his fellow pace bowlers to participate in all five Tests against England.

“From the get-go, we never really planned for five test matches for most of our fast bowlers,” McDonald explained. He highlighted the fortunate scheduling of shortened games earlier in the summer that allowed for the possibility of five Test matches for a fast bowler. The coach reiterated, “We will see what that looks like for Pat.”

As anticipation builds for the Ashes, the Australian team remains focused on Cummins’ recovery and the potential contributions he can make to the squad. The series promises to be a thrilling contest, and Cummins’ experience will be vital for Australia’s hopes of success against their long-standing rivals.
